That's right! The first Drupal Japan Meet Up of 2012 is now free of charge thanks to the generous sponsorship of KDDI, Alethia, Wixi and of course our fine selves Rain Interactive.

If you haven't heard already Drupal is an open-source content management platform used for building all kinds of complex websites and systems. Already popular among developers and enterprises globally, it has yet to gain a serious following in Japan, despite the great benefits it provides for web developers, and clients. There is plenty of discussion online regarding Drupal and other open source systems, but generally in our experience Drupal serves a fine need for sites that are complex enough to stretch most CMS systems but not enough to warrant a fully custom one.

Drupal is great for providing incredible customisation and functionality without the expense of a purely custom system. Of course there are times for a custom system, but Drupal serves that space where a very powerful site or system can be built without starting from scratch, or some proprietary software putting clients into the choke-hold of one vendor.

For us developers we can provide really great web sites as well as great value to our clients - which makes us all happy!

So far Drupal has not gained much traction in Japan, and so with the efforts of the current community and fellow sponsors, we are all hoping to kick off its awareness and adoption in 2012. We feel it is a great technology for the overall good of the web.

Re-starting I should say in 2011 was the first reboot of the Drupal meet up, and now in 2012 we're upping the ante, with a bigger event at NTT in Kojimachi and aiming to bring in the new and ready to rumble.

Previously this event was at ¥1500, with various discounts from the different sponsors. But now to make things simpler, we've jack in the price and it's no charge for everyone signed up!
