Rain Joins British Embassy Football Club Japan for Football Remembers
In Tokyo, the BEFC and friends from the international community took part in a Football Remembers commemorative game held at NSK’s Saginuma sports field on Sunday 7 December 2014. As a sponsor of BEFC's website and involved in the organising and online promotion of the event, Rain was there too.
Football Remembers is a British Council, Premier League and English FA initiative that commemorates the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War - the 1914 Christmas Truce football match. On the week of Dec 6th - 14th, over the UK and the rest of the world professional and amateur teams staged events and took commemorative photos preceding their matches. These photos were uploaded to a special website using the Twitter or Instagram hashtag #footballremembers.
The message BEFC wished to focus on was to celebrate international solidarity, friendship and peace through football. More than 30 players of 9 nationalities took part, including members of the British Embassy, British Council, NSK, Sony, Keidanren (and of course Rain) - as well as others from the Japanese and international business community.
The event was covered by the media and articles appeared in the Sankei and Yomuiri shimbun, and on the UK government's website.
Also Prince William who is visiting Japan at the end of February is a leading supporter of Football Remembers so it will be interesting to see if BEFC's support of this event gains any royal notice -- and perhaps he'll join in a game.
